Last Tuesday afternoon, the equipment manager of a water utility expansion project in northern Jiangsu added us on WeChat, and his first message was: "A DN1200 butterfly valve arrives the day after tomorrow, and the flange-to-flange dimension doesn't match the drawings. What do we do on site?" By the time you ask, the losses are already mounting. In our years as an authorized SUFA distributor, we receive calls like this several times a year. Procuring large-diameter butterfly valves and gate valves is simply not the same game as standard sizes.

Fix the Structure Type First, Then Talk Price

Many purchase lists carry just one line: "Butterfly valve DN1200." That's a landmine waiting to go off. Large-diameter butterfly valves come in wafer, double-flange, and flanged-with-expansion-joint versions; gate valves split into rising-stem and non-rising stem, wedge and parallel slide — structurally completely different. How deep the valve chamber goes, whether the valve is buried or above ground, which way the handwheel faces — all of this ties back to the structure type.

Last year on a county waterworks project, the drawing called for a DN1000 butterfly valve, the lowest bidder supplied a wafer type, but the concrete valve chamber had been cast with clearances for a double-flange valve. Return, reshipment, and a schedule pushed back hard. The contractor was anxious; the owner even more so.

The fix? Send the supplier the installation node drawings at the inquiry stage and lock down the structure type, connection dimensions, and actuation (gear or electric) in one go. Our advice: an inquiry for a large-diameter valve should specify at least five elements — size, structure type, connection method, pressure class, and actuation. With all five, quotes become comparable. For the structural differences across SUFA's butterfly valve and gate valve series, get an overview in the product center first, then select against the drawings.

Lead Time Is the Open Ledger; Shipping Documents Are the Hidden One

For standard models above DN800, manufacturers generally have no stock — production must be scheduled, valves tested, packed, and shipped. Municipal schedules are rigid, so lead time and phased delivery plans must be written into the contract; verbal promises don't count.

Then there is the hidden ledger: shipping documents. Certificate of conformity, nameplate, and a pressure test report for every valve — for large diameters, ideally per unit. SUFA ships every valve with a factory test record; check each item against the contract parameters at acceptance. In recent years we've seen this several times — the valve is installed, the supervision engineer asks for the pressure test report, and after ransacking the boxes it can't be found, so everyone goes back to the distributor to chase documents, wasting half a month.

At unboxing, compare the nameplate's size, pressure rating, and material against the contract before signing. Ten minutes that can save a world of trouble.

Ask About After-Sales and Spares Before You Buy

Reworking a large-diameter valve is expensive: cofferdams, water shutoffs, crane mobilization — none of it cheap. So clarify the warranty scope, response method, and access to original factory technical support before you buy. Our approach: technical questions are handled directly by phone or WeChat, and anything requiring the factory goes through the SUFA channel — we don't leave customers guessing from the manual.

Think about spares early, too. Seat rings, gate discs, and stems in large sizes are mostly custom-made with long lead times. Utilities that can should keep a set of wear parts at handover — much better than waiting for replacements during a water outage.

If you're unsure about your operating conditions, send the media, pressure, and size to the contact us page. One question before selection saves far more than one retrofit after installation.

Buying large-diameter valves isn't about the unit price — it's about fit, sealing, and serviceability. A few points of price difference, and one failure wipes it all out.

Next procurement season — does your inquiry sheet for large-diameter butterfly and gate valves include a shipping documents clause?
