Cast steel gate valves are used for media shut-off. When fully open, the flow passage is completely straight through with minimal pressure loss. Gate valves are typically suitable for services that do not require frequent operation and where the disc is kept either fully open or fully closed. They are not suitable for throttling or regulating duties. For high-velocity media, a partially open disc may cause vibration, which can damage the sealing faces of the disc and seat, while throttling exposes the disc to erosion by the media.

Cast steel globe valves are used to shut off media flow. The stem axis is perpendicular to the seat sealing face, and opening/closing is achieved by raising and lowering the disc. Once fully open, the seat and disc sealing faces no longer contact each other, and the valve provides a highly reliable shut-off action with minimal mechanical wear on the sealing faces. Since sealing elements can be repaired or replaced without removing the entire valve from the pipeline, globe valves are especially suitable where the valve and pipeline are welded as one unit.

Cast steel check valves allow media to flow in one direction only and prevent reverse flow. These valves normally operate automatically: under the pressure of fluid flowing in one direction, the disc opens; when the fluid flows backward, the disc is pressed onto the seat by the fluid pressure and its own weight, cutting off the flow.

Cast steel ball valves feature a 90-degree rotational movement with a spherical plug having a circular bore or channel through its axis. Ball valves are mainly used in pipelines for shut-off, distribution and change of flow direction; with only a 90-degree rotation and very small torque, they close tightly. Ball valves are best suited as on-off and shut-off valves.
