Last Thursday evening, Lao Zhou from the equipment department of a combined heat and power plant in southern Jiangsu called: the steam temperature at the superheater outlet kept drifting high. When the desuperheating spray water control valve was opened up, the cage's inner wall was grooved by erosion, and it whistled at low opening. In our years as an authorized SUFA distributor, spray water control valves rank among the most frequently named items in repair calls from power and CHP customers. Not a big unit, but a critical one — when the spray water control valve misbehaves, the whole boiler's steam temperature swings with it.

The Two Fields Most Often Left Blank: Differential Pressure and Flow

Desuperheating spray water is usually taken from feedwater, so the differential pressure across the control valve is high. High pressure drop combined with a small opening sends the internal velocity soaring, and cavitation and erosion follow. Many inquiry sheets list only size and pressure class with the flow field blank, so the valve is selected by size alone. An oversized spray water control valve works for years pinned at a small opening, and the erosion concentrates on a single circumferential band.

Our advice: at the inquiry stage, send the upstream and downstream pressures, feedwater temperature, plus the maximum, normal, and minimum flow points — all at once. The valve's pressure drop and rangeability are calculated entirely from these parameters, which then determine whether a single-seat, balanced cage, or multi-stage pressure-dropping structure is needed. For the differences between series, go through the product center first, then discuss the details against the drawings.

Vague parameters cost you in the end. Price a spray water control valve against ordinary globe valves and you get a cheap unit that cuts corners exactly on the cage and sealing surfaces.

Trim Materials and Structure Determine How Well the Valve Resists Erosion

In high-pressure-drop service, erosion is unavoidable — the goal is to slow it down. Hardfacing the plug and seat sealing surfaces with stellite is standard industry practice; for even higher pressure drops, the valve needs a multi-stage pressure-dropping or labyrinth cage to dissipate energy in stages. The body material is graded by media temperature; for the specific grade, follow the operating-condition calculations and the manufacturer's catalog rather than rule-of-thumb.

Another situation appears often on real projects: the plug is eroded, only the trim is replaced, and the system is never examined. The habit of running at a small opening remains, and the new plug grooves again within months. A control valve must be evaluated together with its service conditions. If the root cause isn't fixed, the plug just becomes a consumable.

Internal Leakage Also Traces Back to Installation and Operation

The actuator's fail-safe position must be aligned with the process interlock: when steam temperature exceeds the limit, the spray water must shut off, so the valve should fail closed on loss of air. Leave enough straight-run piping upstream, and purge the pipeline before commissioning after welding. Skip those two steps and you plant hidden trouble.

We've seen this several times in recent years — a new control valve installed, the pipeline not properly purged, and weld slag particles score the seat sealing surface; before long the new valve leaks internally again. The record shows the valve, but the culprit is the pipeline.

The operating side matters too. A spray water control valve dithering for long periods at small openings wears the stem packing fast, raising the risk of external leakage. One extra glance at the stem and gland during routine inspections beats chasing leaks afterwards.

For valves mounted next to the desuperheater, also watch the maintenance clearance and insulation — don't make it impossible for the next repair crew to get tools in. Small details, but overhaul schedules are usually eaten up by exactly these things.

Plan spares early as well. Cages, plugs, and other internals for power-station specifications are mostly custom-made with long lead times. Stock the wear parts before the overhaul — better than waiting for deliveries on the critical path.

If you're unsure about your conditions, organize the pressure drop, temperature, and three flow points and send them via the contact us page. Calculate first, then select — far cheaper than replacing the valve after installation. A spray water control valve is long-cycle equipment; choosing right once buys years of peace of mind. Next time you overhaul and pull the valve — is that selection sheet with the full pressure drop and flow data still on hand?
